A yoga teacher is someone who helps others connect with their inner peace and spiritual awareness. A yoga teacher must have a deep understanding of the practice and be able to guide students safely through each pose. They must also be able to modify poses for different levels of students, as well as be aware of any health conditions that could impact their students’ practice. Becoming a yoga teacher is not an easy task. There are many things you must learn to become a successful instructor.
For most yoga teachers, origami is required knowledge to create a beautiful folding chair for their students. It may not be necessary every day, but things can get pretty interesting if you’re not prepared when your students want something to sit on. A yoga block or two will also come in handy if you don’t have the money to buy the origami chairs.
Hatha Yoga and Power Yoga:
Anyone can call themselves a yoga teacher after attending a one-weekend workshop, so you must know the difference between hatha yoga and power yoga classes before teaching them at different times of the day or week. If someone tries to practice in your Hatha class with their feet behind their head, please refer them to the appropriate class.
The word “Om”:
You may not wish to honor all of your students’ requests but please respect their wishes when they ask you to chant the om before class starts. If some of them are chanting oms, then you should at least do it for solidarity (even if they’re wrong). That is what yoga teachers do. Being able to chant om with the correct pronunciation is also useful if the studio owner asks you why he/she needs a professional yoga teacher. Simply tell her that most amateur yoga teachers cannot chant om correctly and therefore charge more than you.
As a bonus, knowing aromatherapy will make your classes extra fun since people will be asking you about scents during the class (it saves time). You’ll be like a walking yoga store with all the oils and incense you can carry. If you’re not sure what scents to use, at least become familiar with sandalwood and frankincense; these are the most popular aromas for spiritual and physical rejuvenation, respectively.
The Moon Salutation:
This is very important: please don’t forget that we do the moon salutation on nights when there is a full moon. We do this so we can absorb light from the universe as well as cleanse our aura of negative energy accumulated during the day. This special version of Surya Namaskar is perfect for those who enjoy staying up late or getting up early in the morning to practice.
Also, the night version is great for beginners since they aren’t likely to be able to practice during daylight hours. Since you’ll be teaching both day and night classes, it might get tricky if your students want to do the moon salutation. That’s why knowing the difference between the sun salutations will help avoid an awkward situation when your students want to know which one they should do.
Evening classes are great because the students have just worked a full day and tired bodies tend to be more flexible. Unfortunately, many yoga students have other things going on in their lives. Some of them simply cannot attend evening classes if they work Monday through Friday. Therefore, yoga teachers should offer morning classes as well so that everyone can practice twice a week. Keep in mind that it doesn’t matter which time you teach as long as there is another class offered at another time so those who work 9-5 jobs can fit yoga into their busy schedules.

You may not have heard of this type of yoga but it is nice to know about it since you’re teaching others how to practice day in and out. The basic idea is that there are no rules, just breathe and let the kundalini energy flow.
