One of the most important of the basic yoga terms is “Namaste.” Namaste is an Indian greeting form that is considered a great equalizer. It is also used to pose different Yogic Moves.

Yogi or Yogini

Yogi or Yogini refers to someone who performs the yoga art form. A Yogi or Yogini has devoted themselves to the Hindu religion or culture and considers Yoga a part of their lives. Calling someone a Yogi or Yogini can be a respectful way to honor that person’s choices.

Sanskrit

A Sanskrit is the traditional language on which the   Hindu scriptures are based and is used to describe the practice and tradition of Yoga. For example, in Hatha Yoga, the practitioner would use “pranayama” – a breathing exercise – instead of saying “that’s nice.” In Western classes, the phrase is sometimes used interchangeably with “pose.”

Aasna

Aasna describes various moves or Poses that one does while doing Yoga. The most important thing that you can remember is that you are not merely “doing” the Asana; you are focusing your energy and attention on the action of performing the Asana. As such, the process of releasing the breath is part of Asana itself. That said, however, there is a fundamental difference between “bodhisattva” and “Kamasutra.”

Kamasutra

The word “Kamasutra” is used here to refer to the yoga treatise of Hatha Yoga, which traditionally consists of eight books of Yoga. The most popular book of this school, the Charaka Samhita, or “Book of Contemplations,” is the most ancient and holds the title of “greatest single treatise.”

A Lashik

Another essential component of this yoga grammar is the “lasik” procedure, which is a corrective vision correction that many people with astigmatism must undergo. The most basic yoga terms relating to Hatha yoga sutras and asanas are “pranayama” and “sadhana.” While “pranayama” is frequently translated as “breathing exercise,” it refers to a series of asanas (postures) that must be performed before pranayama can be undertaken.

Danda Asana

A Sanskrit term that describes the Asana is “danda,” meaning “a stretched out arch in the body.” To perform this Asana correctly, the student must bend the neck outward, resting the forehead on the floor, with the shoulders, arms, and hands placed in a semi-circular arc on the floor.

Analog Vilom

“Breathing techniques” are also among the most basic yoga terms because they relate to proper breathing techniques during asana practice. “Analog” means breathing in, whereas “Blom” means breathing out. A student must inhale while their stomach expands and then exhale slowly while the stomach contracts. They can also use abdominal breathing techniques.

Kundalini

Another, one of the basic yoga terms, is “kundalini,” meaning “a semi-circular, half-spiral curve of tissue at the base of the spine.” Kundalini yoga classes help students master the art of meditation and breath control while building strength and flexibility. It is an ancient Indian system of postural alignment that initially appeared in the ancient texts of Rig Veda and Mahabharata. It is practiced on the ground, but many teachers prefer standing poses to initiate the pose.
